So, we’ve fallen a bit behind in the rent department as of late. If you can drop a donation below to the WEPAY account please do. 12/4- BEFORE THE DELUGE:

Riots, Rebellion and Resistance
Leading Up to the Battle of Seattle

Join us for a very special showing of rarely-scene movies documenting vibrant, world-wide anarchist activity shortly before the whole world witnessed it in the streets of Seattle. As well, we look back fondly at the consternation it caused for some
time afterwards.

First we screen Undercurrents #6, an hour-long video magazine from England which anticipated Sub-TV. This particular segment includes remarkable footage of surprising opposition to cutting down oaks, defaced television “news” stories, and reports of direct action in streets and forests from around the world. It’s fast-paced, cheeky, and the music is great!

Next up is Breaking the Spell, a documentary on the Battle of Seattle highlighting the role and theory of the infamous “Eugene anarchists.” We conclude by showing the hilarious 60 Minutes interview with some of those same Eugene anarchists, including John Zerzan, who will be speaking at Dry River on December 10.

12/11 – “Guns, Germs & Steel” - A PBS documentary concerning Jared Diamond’s theory on why there is such disparity between those who have advanced technology and those who still live primitively. He argues it is due to the acquisition of guns and steel and the changes brought about by germs.

12/18 – “Pompoko” – A community of magical shapeshifting raccoons desperately struggle to prevent their forest home from being destroyed by urban development.

12/25 – Holiday Double Feature! – “If a Tree Falls: A Story of the Earth Liberation Front” – A rare behind-the-curtain look at the Earth Liberation Front, the radical environmental group that the FBI calls America’s ‘number one domestic terrorist threat.

And Gremlins – A holiday classic about a boy who inadvertantly breaks 3 important rules concerning his new pet and unleashes a horde of malevolently mischievous monsters on a small town.

Since the 2006 Oaxacan Peoples’ Popular Assembly (APPO) uprising, the face and body of Oaxaca’s popular social movement has
changed into many different projects, collectives, community organizations, strategies and struggles. Manovuelta’s films look at
the movement from a different perspective and have been instrumental in identifying different personalities within the social
movement who do not necessarily fit into the boxes assigned by foreign activists, journalists, academics, and intellectuals; from an
entire family who participated as musicians at the barricades in the film “La Familia Raíces”, to a hip hop heroine and several
young men who gain life-changing political formation defending their city in “Xip Xop Oaxaca”, and to the different projects from
the traditional Son Jarocho music movement in Veracruz, Mexico. “Oaxaca en Resistencia” brings several Oaxacan and
Veracruzan artists together with Xip Xop artists, barricaders from the neighborhood the film is set in, and chicanos and chicanas
from all over the US to take one more collective look at the face of Oaxaca’s resistance.
