Tonight is the beginning of a 6-Day, 8-film extravaganza of films that depict worlds even more screwed-up than our own - lessons to learn from in our fight for an alternative to this unjust and violent system we live in.
All films are by donation ($3 suggested) and will be followed by topical discussion. Tea and popcorn available.
Dry River Dystopia Film Series
Friday March 28
7pm: Idiocracy
Private Joe Bauers, the definition of "average American", is selected by the Pentagon to be the guinea pig for a top-secret hibernation program. Forgotten, he awakes 500 years in the future. He discovers a society so incredibly dumbed-down that he's easily the most intelligent person alive.
9pm: Blade Runner (Director's Cut) (1982)
In a cyberpunk vision of the future, man has developed the technology to create replicants, human clones used to serve in the colonies outside Earth but with fixed lifespans. In Los Angeles, 2019, Deckard is a Blade Runner, a cop who specialises in terminating replicants. Originally in retirement, he is forced to re-enter the force when six replicants escape from an offworld colony to Earth.
Saturday March 29:
3:30 pm - Farenheit 451
In an oppressive future, a fireman whose duty is to destroy all books begins to question his task.
Sunday March 30
3:30pm - Metropolis (2001)
An anime retelling of the classic Fritz Lang film from the 30s, this version of Metropolis is also inspired by the pages of the classic comic book "Astro-boy" by Osamu Tezuka. Kenichi and his uncle Shunsaku Ban must find the mystery behind robot girl Tima.
Friday April 11
7pm: Zardoz (1974)
In the far future, a savage trained only to kill finds a way into the community of bored immortals that alone preserves humanity's achievements.
Starring Sean Connery as Zed, who wears nothing but a red diaper and red suspenders throughout the film!
Warning: graphic violence.
9pm: Brazil (1985)
In this classic Terry Gilliam film, a bureaucrat in a retro-future world tries to correct an administrative error and himself becomes an enemy of the state.
Saturday April 12:
3:30 - Soylent Green (1973)
In an overpopulated futuristic Earth, a New York police detective finds himself marked for murder by government agents when he gets too close to a bizarre state secret involving the origins of a revolutionary and needed new foodstuff. stars NRA prez Charelton Heston...
Sunday April 13:
3:30 - Minority Report (2002)
In the future, criminals are caught before the crimes they commit, but one of the officers in the special unit is accused of one such crime and sets out to prove his innocence.
The second in our series based on Phillip K. Dick stories, and the second in our series with overblown actors with crappy politics starring as cops (Charleton Heston in Soylent Green and Tom Cruise here)
